The Merciless by Danielle Vega

The Merciless by Danielle Vega is both a horror and suspense novel that could be described as a culty Mean Girls with a dash of The Exorcist. The book follows Sofia Flores, who constantly changes schools because of her mother’s military job. Whilst moving to a new town, she meets Riley Howard and Brooklyn Stevens, each one being complete the complete opposite of the other. Turmoil rises and boils when Riley’s boyfriend cheats on her with Brooklyn who is continually accused throughout the novel of being possessed and holding the devil himself. Things get out of hand when Riley decides to lock Brooklyn up in an abandoned house and attempts to literally torture the satanic essence out of Brooklyn. Without any more spoilers of the story being told, what I can tell you is the plot twist was something I never saw coming. It was a well-executed plotline that cleverly sets up for the rest of Vega’s series but is ultimately an acquired taste that I can see would repel a big audience because of the teenage angst gone wrong. If you’re looking for a book to read late at night, I would suggest something else, specifically something that doesn’t involve satanic rituals. However, if you’re looking for a read during the fall season to fit the mood I think you found yourself a winner. All-in-all I would give this book a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
